Saguaro Cactus
When thinking of this desert region, the first image in one's mind is often the native Saguaro cactus, typically characterized by its "arms".   A given plant may grow over 50 arms or none at all.
Growing very slowly from seed this cactus may only reach 1/4" tall after two years.  It may take 20 - 50 years to reach a height of just 3 feet tall,  yet it may grow to 30 inches in diameter and to a height of 10 - 52 feet, and it may live for 150-200 years.
The Saguaro is able to absorb and store large amounts of rainwater, and will noticeably expand in the process.  When there is plenty of rain and it is fully hydrated it can weigh between 3200 and 4800 pounds.  It will then use this water as needed to survive during periods of drought.
The Saguaro blossom is the state wildflower of Arizona.
